What better Christmas present than a whopping twelve-track compilation from Bristol’s most exciting new bass music label? Concluding a prolific year for X-AMNT, Bunjy and Kickback have rounded up a posse of brand-new signees for X-AMNT of Bass Vol. 1, landing on Christmas Eve—and a week earlier for Juno Download customers

First up on the roll call is Cornish DJ/producer Subtle Element, whose past drops via Ant TC1’s pioneering Dispatch Recordings and DLR’s fast-rising Sofa Sound imprint have marked him out as one of the drum and bass scene’s most consistent acts. Providing his own spin on the label co-founders’ recent single “Cold Lock”, he opts for a shimmering arrangement, enveloping the track’s original components in a heady mix of delayed FX.

Elsewhere, there are contributions from an array of emerging Bristol beatmakers. soZen’s “I Got Soul”, which calls upon the enrapturing vocal talents of Mali, is a truly unique affair, melding myriad influences from jazz, R&B and liquid drum and bass to produce a seamlessly smooth roller. Meanwhile, DJ Mixjah enlists in singer Maheeda on the sublime and breakbeat-heavy “Healing”, and Fryday serves up raspy, staccato basslines and choppy rhythms on the aptly named “Nitty Gritty”—each living up to the West Country’s reputation as a stronghold for underground dance musicians.

The project’s less well-known guests give it their all, too: Sketch’s boisterous jungle number “Badman”, for instance, is bound to tick all the right boxes for listeners, as is the elusive Sensei Dub’s rumbling, percussive debut “Another Jungle Track”. Berberis’s “Terminator Funk” – one of two appearances on the LP – is a rowdy, vocal-led standout, and the use of reverberating leads and grungy low frequencies on Downstorm’s “Justice” makes for captivating results. Sketch resurfaces on the ragga-leaning “Run It”, and recent signee Nuke returns to the label with “The Old Guard”, a clambering, atmospheric cut exploring new terrain for the X-AMNT camp. All in all, here we’ve got a veritable cocktail of different D&B stylings on show; a perfect reintroduction to the label for followers old and new.
